About Lorraine Rathwell — Portrait Artist

I have always been somehow involved in visual media in one form or another.

portrait artist Lorraine RathwellBeginning as a youngster doodling in my first sketch book, entering school board poster contests, designing my school’s programs and flyers, later studying Fine Arts at John Abbott, then enjoying a career as a graphic designer/illustrator, and now happily spending my days as a portrait artist.

My portraits are done in coloured pencil which allows me to execute great detail. The results are vibrantly colourful, crisp and accurate. The professional grades of coloured pencils are now gaining popularity among many artists who realize the many benefits of the medium.

To familiarize yourself with this wonderful medium, please explore my gallery to view some of my work.

The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.
